Osun
Osun is often
considered a minor Orisha (as if there could be such a thing) that plays an
interesting role in the religion of Santeria. Osun is "received" as
a member of the Warriors (Eshu, Oggun, Ochosi and, of course, little Osun) and
applies His aché to protecting those who receive Him. Osun acts as a "look
out" of sorts, providing an actual physical warning by falling to His side
should danger approach! Should this occur, we "in the religion" will
seek the guidance of Orunmila through a Babalawo to learn exactly what Osun's
warning means, and how the trouble He predicts may be avoided.
The mysteries
of Osun are received in a small metal cup topped with a small metal rooster
and adorned with bells, all perched atop a thin metal stand. When He is introduced
to a believer's home, He is placed high on a shelf (ideally higher than the
recipient's own head) so He has an ample vantage point to perform His sacred
function.
Ebo (offerings)
are never made to Osun directly by those who receive Him, for Osun is the servant
of Eshu, and Eshu is responsible for sharing scraps of His own meal with Osun
as He pleases. It is taboo for anyone else to make offerings to Osun, except
for the Babalawo, who includes Osun in the annual feeding of the three other
Warriors, or when prescribed through Ifa Divination.
